Tame Impala has previously been nominated for three Grammy Awards, with past albums receiving nods in the Best Alternative Music Album category. This year, the group was only nominated in the Best Dance/Electronic Recording category.
While the Tame Impala win is good news for Australian music, fellow homegrown acts RÜFÜS DU SOL and Amyl And The Sniffers lost out in their categories – Best Dance Electronic Album and Best Rock Performance – to FKA twigs and Yungblud, respectively.
End Of Summer was released last July and was the first single to be released from the most recent Tame Impala album, Deadbeat (which was formally announced two months later).
The single pays tribute to various eras of dance music. End Of Summer gradually unfurls itself to reveal Tame Impala as a primal rave act, drawing from acid house music of the ‘90s and Australia’s bush doofs, all leading to a new kind of music from Parker.
Per the official album synopsis, Deadbeat is “a collection of wickedly potent club-psych explorations” that allows Parker to share his most direct, “brain-wormy” songwriting to date. The record also “sounds like the work of an artist with a levelled-up mastery” of music and is packed with “revitalised energy for experimentation.”
As a live act, Parker is joined by Dominic Simper on guitar and synthesiser, Jay Watson on synthesiser, vocals, and guitar, Cam Avery on bass guitar, vocals, and synthesiser, Julien Barbagallo on drums and vocals, and Rafael Lazzaro-Colon on percussion.
Elsewhere at the Grammys this year, it was a big year on the rock and metal fronts. While Yungblud bested Amyl And The Sniffers for Best Rock Performance, Turnstile took out both Best Metal Performance and Best Rock Album with Birds and their Never Enough album, respectively.
They were also nominated in the Best Alternative Music Performance category, which The Cure took out with Alone, from their Songs Of A Lost World record, which was named Best Alternative Music Album. Meanwhile, Nine Inch Nails took home the Best Rock Song with As Alive As You Need Me To Be from the Tron: Ares soundtrack.
Meanwhile, Olivia Dean was named the Best New Artist, while Cirkut was named Producer Of The Year, and Amy Allen took out Songwriter Of The Year. Lola Young's Messy was dubbed Best Pop Solo Performance, while Lady Gaga took out Best Dance Pop Recording and Best Pop Vocal Album with Abracadabra from her Mayhem album.
The year also brought with it a number of impressive performances, including the likes of Bruno Mars, who performed both APT. and I Just Might with Rosé and The Hooligans, respectively. Sabrina Carpenter was on hand to offer up a rendition of Manchild, while Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga both delivered performances of Yukon and Abracadabra, respectively.
The evening also featured a special tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne, with Post Malone and Andrew Watt teaming up with Duff McKagan and Slash of Guns N' Roses, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith honouring the late rocker. Meanwhile, Lauryn Hill took to the stage to share a heartfelt tribute to D'Angelo and Roberta Flack.
Meanwhile, Bad Bunny claimed Album Of The Year with Debí Tirar Más Fotos, Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s Luther picked up Record Of The Year, and Billie Eilish was awarded Song Of The Year for Wildflower.
