Save Our Stages Puts Pressure On Govt To Act: 'We’ll See More Venues Forced To Close'

5 November 2020 | 3:00 pm | Staff Writer

The petition was launched in September.

The Save Our Stages NSW campaign is calling on the public to help urge the Government to act on saving live music venues across the state.

After launching in September, an e-Petition received over 20,000 signatures in just 30 hours and was the first to qualify to be debated in Parliament. However, a date for that debate is yet to be confirmed.

“If the government doesn't act soon to help save our live music industry, we’ll see more venues forced to close and with them, thousands of jobs will be lost and an important part of our local communities gone forever," Chief Operating Officer for Century Venues Sam Nardo, who runs venues such as Enmore Theatre, Factory Theatre, Metro Theatre and Max Watt’s, said.

Save Our Stages NSW is asking the public to send a letter to their local Member of Parliament (MP) calling for support. Click here for more details.

To date, over 70 live music venues have joined the Save Our Stages campaign.

The call comes just weeks after Labor NSW's Right To Play Music Bill - which looks to "tackle liquor licence conditions imposing arbitrary bans and restrictions on live music" and "grants local councils the ability to remove such restrictions from their development consents" - was passed by the NSW Legislative Council.
