Pussy Riot ProfileRussia's Prime Minister Dmitri A. Medvedev has expressed his opinion towards the Pussy Riot saga, claiming that the female punk trio have served enough time and should be freed.
According to The New York Times, Medvedev said. “Imprisonment is a very severe — I would even say a frightening — responsibility... What has already happened — that this well-known group of girls have been in prison quite a long time — is a very serious punishment for everything they did, regardless of the sentence."
He went on to state that the six months already served was "enough to make them think about what happened, because of their stupidity or for some other reasons" and that by holding them in prison would be "unproductive".
Three members of the Russian collective were held in custody and subsequently sentenced over performing a “punk prayer” at Moscow's Christ The Saviour Cathedral ahead of the Russian elections, which saw Vladimir Putin elected as President.
These comments have put Medvedev in the hot seat, as it was the most explicit commentary to come from an officer since the August sentencing.
It is unclear whether Mr. Medvedev's outspoken opinion will have any weight.
