In case it wasn’t already made obvious, Royel Otis work fast.

Their debut album, Pratts & Pain, was released last February. Since then, the Australian indie pop outfit has continuously toured in Australia and across the globe, gone viral with covers of The CranberriesLinger and Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Murder On The Dancefloor, and dropped the single moody last month.

Today, Royel Otis keep up the momentum by announcing their highly anticipated second album, hickey.

Sharing news about the album on social media overnight (23 June), the duo teased: “Because love bites harder than any other emotion in the world…” hickey will be released via OURNESS/Capitol Records on Friday, 22 August. You can pre-order/pre-save the album here.

Their latest single, moody, was written by Royel Maddell, Otis Pavlovic and Grammy Award-winning songwriter Amy Allen, and produced by Blake Slatkin (Gracie Abrams, Omar Apollo, Charli XCX). The pair previously stated that moody is “a song about a girl.”

Since moody’s release and its accompanying visualiser, which makes references to Lolita, Royel Otis received criticism for the song’s alleged misogynistic lyrics.

Addressing the backlash, Royel Otis issued a statement, per news.com.au. They said, “This song is written from a specific perspective; it is not intended to convey a broader view or standpoint about women in general. We apologise if anyone understood those lyrics otherwise.”

In addition to announcing their new album, Royel Otis recently shared new tour dates for their upcoming North American tour, which will begin in August this year. To celebrate their new music, the duo has recently performed pop-up concerts in London, Los Angeles, and New York.

While the pair will spend the majority of their tour in the US, they’ll also head to Japan, the UK and Europe for festival season, appearing at Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds, Montreux Jazz Festival, Fuji Rock, Lollapalooza (Berlin and Chicago), Outside Lands, Lowlands, and more.
