Rapper Young Lo Killed In Miami Nightclub Shooting

Rapper Young Lo has been killed in a shooting at a Miami Beach nightclub over the weekend. He was 37.

Lo, real name Lowell Grissom, was rushed to hospital after a shooter opened fire during a party at the Gala Nightclub shortly before 4 a.m. on May 8, where he later died. Two others were also injured in the shooting, but are expected to be okay.

Following the incident, The Gala posted a message to their Instagram that read in part, "We are shocked and deeply saddened by the isolated and targeted incident that occurred last night at our upscale establishment."

Friends of the hip-hop star, who has collaborated with the likes of Tyga and Chris Brown, told CBS Miami that they believe the attack was targeted and that the two injured were bystanders.

At the time of writing, no arrests have been made.

Model and performer Carmen Carrera, who was also present at the time of the shooting, took to Twitter to recount her harrowing experience. 

“So I just experienced my first night club shooting,” the Drag Race alum wrote. 

“Fabolous and J Balvin were both in the building. It was a high-end club. As the entire club ducks down, I grabbed my girlfriends and jet out the door. I cannot believe this is the reality of the world that we live in today."

Following news of his death, friends of the rapper paid tribute to the father-of-one, with creative collaborator and Grammy-nominated producer Christian “Hitmaka” Ward telling Billboard Lo was "just a great people person".

“Lo has been a longtime friend of mine for like 15 years,” Hitmaka aka Yung Berg told the publication.

 “We go as far back to when Ray J and I were doing Sexy Can I and all these different records. Lo was just a great people person who knew how to put the right people together and had the resources to where maybe a Chris Brown or such-and-such [artist] might be good for a project." 

"Lo was always a great asset to me. He was just great energy. Everybody loved to have Lo around. He was also very selfless, putting a lot of people before himself.

“This is truly a tragedy,” Hitmaka continued. “I haven’t lost a close friend like that, so this has rocked my world. I’m just dealing with picking up the pieces, helping out his mother, his family and his son. I’m sending super condolences to his family and loved ones." 

"And man, I want to preach to everybody to just stay safe. Tomorrow isn’t promised. Tell loved ones that you love them on a daily basis because you just never know.”
