Animal rights organisation PETA has issued an open letter to Robert Plant, the frontman of the legendary blues/rock band Led Zeppelin, and urged him to temporarily change his name to “Robert Plant Wool.”
Why? To raise awareness for its Plant Wool Month, which takes place in November.
Designed as an alternative to sheep farming for their wool, Plant Wool Month celebrates “animal-free and plastic-free yarns” while promoting sustainable fashion, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and protecting sheep.
In their letter to Plant, PETA claimed that the short-term name change would raise awareness for plant-powered knits, including hemp, cotton, orange waste, and other sustainable materials.
The organisation also notes that awareness of plant wool could help people turn away from animal wool and cashmere industries, arguing that sheep farming is abusive and destructive to the planet.

“To show a whole lotta love to animals and the Earth ahead of Plant Wool Month in November, we’ve sent a letter to former Led Zeppelin frontman and environmental activist Robert Plant, asking him to temporarily change his name to ‘Robert Plant Wool,’” a notice on PETA’s website reads.
The post continues, “The short-term name change would help celebrate cosy, plant-powered yarns – made from hemp, cotton, orange waste, and more – and urge everyone to shun the cruel and environmentally-destructive wool and cashmere industries.”
In the letter, PETA quoted Led Zeppelin lyrics throughout, including in this passage: “As you’ve wisely said, the past is a stepping stone, not a millstone. The future of wool is plants, and we hope you’ll join us to celebrate this kind, green evolution of functional fashion.”
PETA also stated that the aim of Plant Wool Month is to generate more recognition for “hard-working crop farmers, innovative textile makers, and pioneering designers who grow, spin, and work with these beautiful yarns to create knitwear, suits, and more.”
Robert Plant hasn’t yet shared a response to the open letter for PETA. Head here to find out more about Plant Wool Month and view the letter for yourself.
