The annual summer pavilion design, this year created by M@ STUDIO, has been inspired by a humble carwash
The National Gallery of Victoria’s annual architecture commission has been unveiled today and it’s like something out of the Jetsons.
The design, inspired by a carwash in Blackburn, is a neon pink 23-metre-long structure that reimagines an ordinary, kitsch suburban building as a vivid, vibrant, eye-popping wonder. It aims to elevate the status of buildings that are frequently overlooked for their mundanity and yet also commonly form the backbone of suburban communities.
Created by Melbourne-based architects, M@ STUDIO, the building combines artistic flare with Summer-centric ergonomic principles. In addition to shady canopies, visitors can also cool down in the hyper-colour pavilion’s water misters.
The temporary pop-up building, which formerly opens to the public from tomorrow, will occupy the NGV’s sculpture garden until April next year.
