Due to the widespread and still-developing impact the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is having on the music industry across the world, it's times like this we start to see those who can reach out and offer help however possible. From streamed concerts to increased promotion of artists' music to calls for punters to not ask for refunds to cancelled concerts, the ways that we can help our community both here and abroad continue to come to light.
One major way to support artists in this incredibly difficult time is to purchase their music and merchandise directly from them. From copping a sweet new tee or tote to finally purchasing that vinyl you've been wanting for a while, if you can afford to do so, now is the time to do it.
The latest organisation to put their money where their mouth is and back this call to help artists make as much money from music purchases as possible is BANDCAMP, who today announced they will be waiving their revenue share this Friday. Their usual 15% on digital sales and 10% on merchandise will be waived from Friday from midnight PST to midnight PST (that's about 5pm AEDT, Friday March 20th) in an effort to try and get as much money to artists when their foreseeable income has been all but completely wiped out.
In a statement, BANDCAMP co-founder and CEO Ethan Diamond said, “For many artists, a single day of boosted sales can mean the difference between being able to pay rent or not. It may sound simple, but the best way to help artists is with your direct financial support, and we hope you’ll join us on Friday and through the coming months as we work to support artists in this challenging time.”
