The kids are alright with it
Heading out on the road for a final jaunt before throwing himself at album number four, Josh Pyke has sung the praises of the singer-songwriter genre, saying it's not hostage to the swings and roundabouts of cultural trends.
Pyke, who grew up on the metal flavours of Metallica and Pantera before discovering Elliot Smith, told the Drum Media Perth recently, “I think the fortunate thing for me about this genre is that it's never really in fashion and it's never really out of fashion. There's always a group of people that seem to like it, and there's people that like it as well as being into metal or whatever.
"I have lots of fans that are into hip hop or whatever but then they like my music as well, you know? So I think it's been a really fortunate thing for me and for other people who are doing my sort of stuff. It's never in or out of fashion.”
Pyke added that he's demoed about ten songs for his next album, but will look to have 20 on the table before whittling the selection down to ten for the record.

“So far I've got about 12 songs written,” he said. “I've demoed about ten of those, but as soon as the tour's over I'm gonna really knuckle down. I like to have 20 songs basically, to whittle down to a ten-track album.”
