For people who use their ears so much, the health of their hearing seems to be a relatively low priority for a not-insignificant number of young musicians, DJs and their fans.

In fact, recent statistics from hearing-health library HearNet suggest that 34% of hearing loss issues are caused by preventable and prolonged exposure to noises of considerable volume, and within the next 35 years, we'll reach a point where a quarter of people are suffering from some form of hearing loss. While at least part of that increase has been attributed to the country's inherently ageing population, HearNet says that "it's becoming more apparent that young people's exposure to dangerous noise is on the increase".

"Despite noise exposure in the workplace being regulated, young generations are acquiring permanent hearing loss because they expose themselves to damaging noise in their leisure time," the researchers wrote. "As a result, Australians are also now acquiring hearing loss much earlier than previous generations."
