After years of waiting, the mighty Metallica launched their Australian tour in Perth on Saturday night (November 1st).
First announced over a year ago, the nascent dates are part of the band’s ongoing M72, and mark their first trip to Australia since headlining the 2013 edition of the long-gone Soundwave festival.
Having originally planned to tour the country in 2019 with Slipknot, these dates were cancelled, with the group eventually planning their comeback for late 2025. This time, however, they would be joined by the mighty Evanescence and Suicidal Tendencies. The latter act sees Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo’s son, Tye, on bass – reprising his father’s position in the band.
Launching with their standard intro by way of Ennio Morricone's The Ecstasy Of Gold, Metallica's first Australian setlist in 13 years was one full of the hits and classics that fans would adore.
Comprising of six songs taken from their iconic Black Album, and leaning heavily on their '80s and '90s material, it's a setlist that would appeal to the diehards – with For Whom The Bell Tolls, Creeping Death, Seek & Destroy, and Master Of Puppets all receiving their a well-earned spot in the night.
Following last night’s show, Metallica will continue proceedings with a date in Adelaide on November 5th, before visiting Melbourne next weekend, and wrapping up with shows in Brisbane and Sydney over the next week. Full dates are available here.
