Tim Very, the longtime drummer of the American indie rock band Manchester Orchestra, has died at the age of 42. No cause of death has been revealed.

The tragic news was confirmed by his bandmates, Andy Hull, Robert McDowell, and Andy Price, in a statement posted to social media over the weekend. In their post, they wrote, “We’ve all been dreading sharing this news as we are all still in absolute disbelief.”

You can read the band’s full statement below.

Formerly the drummer in Waking Ashland, Very joined Manchester Orchestra in 2011. He played on their record Simple Math, released that year. He replaced Jeremiah Edmond, who departed the band the previous year to focus on his family and running the band’s record label.

Serving as the band’s longest-running drummer, Very appeared on the following albums: 2014’s Cope (and its acoustic sibling, Hope), 2017’s A Black Mile To The Surface, and 2021’s The Million Masks Of God. In 2023, the band unveiled the EP The Valley Of Vision, and next month, they’ll release the live album, Union Chapel (London, England).

In addition to his work with Manchester Orchestra, Very was an experienced session musician and producer, and co-founded the production company Super Canoe, based in the band’s home city of Atlanta, Georgia.

Manchester Orchestra last toured Australia in February 2018, in support of A Black Mile To The Surface.

Manchester Orchestra’s statement about Tim Very’s passing reads:

The entire Manchester Orchestra family has been devastated by the sudden passing of our brother, Timothy Very. The most beloved human being any of us were lucky enough to know in this life. We’ve all been dreading sharing this news as we are all still in absolute disbelief.

Tim was instantly likable and interacted with everyone he met with kindness and warmth. His laugh was infectious and he immediately made people feel invited and encouraged. His humor and energy were the very foundation that held together the entire MO universe. Strangers quickly became friends and friends became family.

He had an undeniable light that was only matched by his dedication and love for the craft that he was clearly put on earth to do. No words can ever do him justice. Please know, if you are someone who loved Tim, he loved you too.

The only thing that Tim loved more than creating music was being with his family. You’d be pressed to find a more joyful dad.

We love you Tim, thank you for loving us. You are a force of positivity that will be a constant presence in the rest of our days.
