The family of AC/DC legend Malcolm Young has confirmed the guitarist is suffering from dementia, which has forced his retirement from the iconic Aussie band.

A statement released by Young's relatives today, as reported by Rolling Stone said: "Malcolm is suffering from dementia and the family thanks you for respecting their privacy."

Rumours began to circulate about Young's condition last week after AC/DC announced his retirement from the band.

"Earlier this year, AC/DC released a statement explaining that due to illness, Malcolm would be taking a break from the band. Unfortunately, due to the nature of Malcolm's condition, he will not be returning to the band," said the group in a statement last week.

News of the guitarist's ailing health first broke in April.

AC/DC will release their 15th album Rock Or Bust this December, their first without Young.
