More Louis Theroux More Louis Theroux

Watching Louis Theroux, one of the greatest documentary filmmakers of our time, freestyle rap about Gandalf to a packed Perth crowd was just one of many charming moments offered by Without Limits.

The acclaimed British TV personality’s return to Australia saw him build off his 2016 sell-out run with a show that gave real insight into not only how Theroux approaches his craft, but his musings on some of life’s biggest and unanswered questions.

Fans were treated to clips of some of his best work with running commentary and Theroux was seemingly more comfortable this time around and more in sync with moderator Julia Zemiro after touring together in 2016 and appearing on Home Delivery in 2018.

While Theroux was largely in the shadows during each clip, you could still clearly see him cringing in horror as he watched a few of his more awkward moments played back; specifically, when he auditioned to be a performer on a Norwegian cruise ship during Weird Weekends.

It’s those funny onscreen moments that Theroux stressed were imperative to his approach; by immersing himself in whatever topic he is documenting, he’s able to break down barriers and earn the trust of those featured in his films, ultimately resulting in a far more insightful end product.

"I was a pioneer of the dick pic,” Theroux joked, referring to a nude Polaroid of himself that was taken while he was documenting the porn industry early on in his career.

“Where is that Polaroid now?" Zemiro asked, to which he responded: "That's a worrying thought."

Attendees also got to witness Theroux working his magic live as he ventured out to the crowd to interview the people of Perth before he welcomed former member of the Westboro Baptist Church, Megan Phelps-Roper, to the stage.

Phelps-Roper, who has appeared across multiple Theroux documentaries on the church over the years, shared insight into her departure from the group, which resulted in ties being severed with her family, as well as Theroux’s role in her journey.

From the Westboro Baptist Church to polyamory, open adoption, assisted dying, Nazis, Scientology and more, Theroux provided a neat overview of his career to date and the evolution of his approach.

"Weirdness is intricately built into the human condition" and Louis Theroux is just trying to get to the bottom of that. Without Limits is heartbreaking, hilarious and informative.
