Kings Cross Venue Ordered To Take 'Keep Sydney Open' Banner Down Or Face Fine

'We had good intentions in putting the banner up. It was about supporting a community initiative and local businesses in the area."

A popular Kings Cross venue has been ordered to take a 'Keep Sydney Open' banner down from its balcony or face a $6,000 fine.

As Sydney Morning Herald reports, a residents group which supports Sydney's lockout laws complained to the City Of Sydney about the illegal banner displayed at the Kings Cross Hotel.

The banner, which was raised in support of last weekend's Keep Sydney Open festival, will reportedly be taken down today as management hung the sign without seeking development approval from council.

"We had good intentions in putting the banner up," Dan Lacaze said, who works as managing director at Solotel, owners of the venue.

"It was about supporting a community initiative and local businesses in the area."

Peter Young of the 2011 Residents Association slammed the banner as "free advertising" and accused Keep Sydney Open of being a lobbying front for the alcohol and hotel industry.

Keep Sydney Open's Tyson Koh dismissed Young's comments, saying, "It hurts that there are groups out there that think Keep Sydney Open is driven by alcohol industry or tainted money or drug money, when its support comes from thousands of people who support a safe and vibrant nightlife".

Lacaze added that Keep Sydney Open's Meet Me In The Cross event drew the venue its biggest attendance figures since 2014.

"We had no incidents," Lacaze said.

"It's a good example of how events like these can be managed in a good way."
