Melbourne-born DJ Kaz James has launched his new record label with a slick new single, pairing the latter with what is bound to be one of the year’s most iconic cover photos.
The new single, Sun Is Shining, arrives via James’ nascent Krushes record label, and follows in the footsteps of some of music’s greats.
Adopting a sample from Bob Marley and the Wailers’ 1971 single of the same name (which in turn topped charts in 1999 when Danish producer Funkstar De Luxe remixed the track), it’s a summery dance hit that has been turning heads since James first dropped it during his Burning Man performance last month.
“Sun Is Shining is a track built for sunsets, sunrises and beaches,” James said in a statement. “And for just people looking for a good time – or maybe more. When you hear it you are like, ‘yep, this krushes’”.
While his statement explains the reasoning behind his label’s moniker, one of the biggest mysteries that arises from the arrival of Sun Is Shining is the cover art which adorns its release. Featuring James behind the decks, the image sees him resting his arm on the shoulder of a shirtless Bill Murray.

“So, I’m playing at this wild party in Jamaica, and out of nowhere, a shirtless Bill freakin' Murray walks up,” James explains. “He casually comes into the DJ booth, gives me this mischievous, almost devilish look. I hand him my headphones, and he starts messing with the mixer like he's done it a thousand times.
“He strikes a pose for a pic, then just heads off and dances like a madman for two solid hours in front of me on the dance-floor,” he adds. “It was one of those 'did that really just happen?' moments."
While his literal shoulder-brushing with the legendary actor is undoubtedly a major highlight for James, it’s just one of a series of career milestones that have occurred in recent years. Having emerged from underground clubs in Melbourne, James caught the attention of Frankie Knuckles who chose him to open performances across Europe.
With numerous critically-acclaimed singles to his name over the years, his international profile has continued to rise thanks to performances at the likes of Greece's Alemagou and infamous US festival Burning Man, and friendships with names such as fellow Aussies RÜFÜS DU SOL. Now, it seems he can also add Bill Murray to that long list of friends.
Kaz James’ Sun Is Shining is out now on all streaming platforms.
