More Drapht More Drapht

If you're a fan of veteran English comedian Jimmy Carr, there's a good chance you've experienced a bit of an Australian influence at his shows.

That influence has apparently come by way of Australian hip hop mainstay Drapht, whose 2008 song Jimmy Recard has been serving as Carr's walk-on music for his live appearances.

If you squint your ears a little, there's every chance you might mishear the track as seeming like one custom made for Carr's live appearances, as one fan of the comedian apparently believed,

Taking to social media recently, Drapht shared a clip of Carr explaining the track's origin, responding to a fan who had enquired about its role in the comic's live show.

"The song that I had made for the show, the song that was on just before the show, it's called Jimmy Recard," he began. "It's an Australian song. It sounds a bit like my name, but it's not my name.

"I didn't have the song made," he admitted. “I just fucking straight lifted it from this guy. I was doing a show with a friend in Australia and a guy came up and went, 'Ah yeah, mate, there's a song. Sounds like your fucking name.' And I went, 'I'll fucking have it.'

"It's fun though, right?"

Though the song might be a new discovery for some of Carr's fans, it's been a staple of the Australian music scene for 18 years.

First released in 2008, the track became Drapht's first to reach the ARIA charts, appearing on his album Brothers Grimm, and cracking the top ten of the triple j Hottest 100 that same year.

"I was thinking of successful names so I jumped on the net and actually googled successful names and came up with 'James' and 'Recard,'" Drapht told triple j upon its release. "So I changed 'James' to 'Jimmy' and used 'Recard' as the last name.

"I think a name does a lot for a character and where you go in life. And it was a positive track on the record because a lot of my stuff kind of feeds from negative ideas."

Though there's no official analytics as to whether the name Jimmy Carr has helped the comedian achieve higher levels of success, it does however offer his audiences a chance to once again raise their glass for the king of the bar… Jimmy Recard.
