Ikonika Lashes Out At Gender Bias Music Journos

“I only want to be known as a DJ/producer/label owner without my vagina getting a shout out.”

Dupstep musician and electronic producer Ikonika, aka Sarah Abdel-Hamid, has vented out her frustrations to TheMusic in a recent interview, criticising gender bias music journalists.

Abdel-Hamid explained. “I only want to be known as a DJ/producer/label owner without my vagina getting a shout out.”

In 2010, she criticised the 'girl' label received by women who take on male-dominated genres and roles in the music world. Speaking to The Guardian, she said: “I hate this 'first lady of dubstep' shit. Do they think I go around consciously thinking about my gender?”

Ikonika will be heading to Australia for a string of shows this month, playing at This Is Nowhere festival in Perth and sideshows in Sydney and Melbourne.
