Iggy Azalea Writes Letter In Support Of Tory Lanez Amid Sentencing

Iggy Azalea has extended her support to rapper Tory Lanez as he faces sentencing for the shooting incident involving fellow artist Megan Thee Stallion.

ICYMI: Lanez (real name Daystar Peterson) was found guilty on three felony counts, including assault with a semiautomatic firearm, discharging a firearm with gross negligence, and having a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle. The prosecution is seeking a 13-year sentence, while Lanez's defence team has argued for probation.

Law & Crime senior journalist Meghann Cuniff took to Twitter during a two-hour lunch break at Los Angeles Superior Court, during which she revealed that Australian-born rapper Iggy Azalea was one of more than 70 people who wrote letters in support Lanez.

"Alright we are on the 90-minute break," Meghann Cuniff wrote in the first tweet.

"Judge Herriford got 70+ letters of support for Tory Lanez, including one from @IggyAzalea. He briefly summarised each one. Two jailers wrote letters, one spoke in court. Lanez's father, Sonstar Peterson, was the last speaker before the break."

Later, she went into detail as to what the Fancy rapper’s letter of support entailed, saying that she had recommended to Judge David Herriford that the consequences Tory Lanez is facing for shooting Megan Thee Stallion shouldn’t be completely detrimental to the Canadian rap-crooner's life.

"That jailer didn't talk in court, but the chaplain did, (I should be able to get the letters, but maybe not today," Meghann Cuniff wrote in the tweet.

Judge Herriford said Iggy Azalea's letter asks him to impose a sentence "that is transformational, not life-destroying."

Iggy’s outspoken support of Lanez has understandably ruffled some feathers, with social media users digging up previous instances of the Mullumbimby-born MC backing the disgraced rapper.

"HE SHOT MEGAN IGGY," a Twitter user wrote to Iggy in 2022. "He hasn't been convicted of anything my guy," she responded back.

"And you aren't going to bully me into anything. Go touch grass."

Others seemed confused at her support of Lanez considering that she had previously accused her ex-boyfriend and father of her son Onyx, Playboy Carti, of “serial abuse”.

Meanwhile, the reporter also gave insight into Megan Thee Stallion’s movements during the proceedings, saying she said she had “struggled with whether to attend in person, and her absence should be seen as her preserving her mental well-being.” She said since Tory shot her, "I've not experienced a single day of peace."

“He lied to anyone that would listen and paid bloggers to disseminate false information about the case on social media. He released music videos and songs to damage my character and continue his crusade,” Megan said of Lanez.

“At first, he tried to deny the shooting ever happened. Then, he attempted to place the blame on my former best friend. In his tantrum of lies, he’s blamed the system, blamed the press and, as of late, he’s using his childhood trauma to shield himself and avoid culpability.”

“For once, the defendant must be forced to face the full consequences of his heinous actions and face justice.”

Megan added that “mercy is for people who show remorse, and Lanez has shown none.”

She thanked the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for their support and hopes the sentence will send a message to everyone when it comes to violence against women.

The sentencing hearing continues tomorrow (August 9) at 10:30 am in Los Angeles.
