Tasmania’s loudest band, Spooky Eyes, experienced the live music dream of a lifetime over the weekend, when they opened for Foo Fighters at UTAS Stadium in Launceston. And they even have a handwritten note from Dave Grohl to show for it.

Spooky Eyes took to the stage at 6:20 pm on Saturday (24 January). In the letter from Grohl, the singer and guitarist revealed that he tried to visit the band before they hit the stage, “but holy fuckin shit, it was a mile away!”

Grohl also wrote that “really digs” the Tassie psych rockers and hopes to play with them again someday. The letter reads:

Hey –

It’s Dave. I tried to come visit you guys before you went on, but holy fuckin shit, it was a mile away!

So, hope you guys had a great show, and thank you so much for playing tonight!

I really dig your band and hope someday we do more shows.

Much love and whiskey,

Dave Grohl

After a security guard passed the note to the band, Spooky Eyes bolted to the UTAS Stadium green room to meet the Foo Fighters and give them a copy of their vinyl.

The trio enjoyed ten minutes meeting and chatting with the US rockers.

Fellow opening act, Full Flower Moon Band, posted a hilarious video on social media capturing their feelings about potentially meeting Dave Grohl before the show at a 25,000-seat stadium.

Meanwhile, supporting Foo Fighters turned out to be the coolest way for Spooky Eyes to kick off their upcoming tour. This Friday (30 January), the band begin the tour as they release their debut self-titled album. Tickets are available here.

The first single pulled from the album is a cover of The Count Five's 1966 garage classic, Psychotic Reaction. A riff-focused record drawing on psychedelia, acid rock, proto-metal, and a jam-driven energy, Spooky Eyes brings ‘60s underground sounds to 2026.

The band’s self-titled album will be released this Friday via Nibson Mother Records. Set to be released digitally, on vinyl, and on CD, you can pre-order your copy of the album here.

Spooky Eyes’ upcoming tour follows shows opening for the Foo Fighters, Jack White, and Wolfmother, as well as appearances at Party In The Paddock and Dark Mofo festivals.

The group launched in 2022, and what began as the solo project of frontman Jude Hastings has since evolved into a full-blown live show as a three-piece, also featuring Jaxon Bassett on drums and Piper Rayner on bass guitar.
