Australian singer Cody Simpson has detailed a series of setbacks he’s recently experienced, revealing that he underwent surgery for a damaged vocal cord and dislocated his knee, leaving him unable to “walk or talk.”

Back in May, Simpson was forced to cancel a string of radio and television performances promoting his new single after he suffered a “serious haemorrhage” on one of his vocal cords. He also pushed back his forthcoming album.

Now, a few months later, he’s had surgery for the vocal cord, but after facing that, Simpson dislocated his knee while rehearsing for a new music video.

He posted the news on Instagram this week (30 June), sharing a photo of himself using crutches and two videos: one of a doctor explaining what happened, and a short clip of his fall while rehearsing for the music video.

“The universe is serving it to me this year,” Simpson captioned the post. “An update on where I’ve been: I’ve been on and off vocal rest for close to 3 months trying to heal a damaged vocal cord.”

He continued, “We decided to operate to aid the recovery, then I dislocated my knee rehearsing for a new music video, and we had to push surgery back to let my knee settle. I can’t walk or talk for some time now, and no singing or dancing for months to come.

“I’ve been pushing my body and mind for years now non-stop, and I’m taking time to reflect and understand this for what it is: forced rest. The album and live shows have to wait, but I’ve got some work to share while I’m down for the count. You can’t hold me down! I’ll be back stronger.”

Simpson concluded the post by cheekily noting that “we still shot the music video.”

Simpson returned to his singing career two years ago, after unfortunately failing to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games. His singing career was on hold as he pursued his sporting dreams as a professional swimmer.

Earlier this year, Simpson signed with BMG in partnership with Range Music for his future releases. His latest single, Baby Blue, was released in late March.
