Australian pop singer Cody Simpson has revealed that he was forced to cancel a string of radio and television performances promoting his new single after he suffered a “serious hemorrhage” on one of his vocal cords.

Simpson shared the news by posting a photo that appears to be from a doctor’s office on social media. Explaining that he hoped to keep the experience private, a month after discovering said serious hemorrhage, he’s opened up to fans.

“Just over a month ago, we discovered a serious hemorrhage on one of my vocal cords,” Simpson wrote on Instagram, adding that it occurred “due to my overzealousness in the studio,” where he continued to sing despite having a sinus infection he didn’t know he had.

He continued, “Assumed it was just fatigue and kept showing up to the studio until one day I could no longer sing. I’ve now been on and off vocal rest for weeks, cancelling TV and radio performances for Baby Blue in the process.”

Because of his current condition, Simpson’s upcoming album—close to completion—has been impacted. He’s been prescribed a further two weeks of silence in the hopes of avoiding surgery, which requires a “much longer recovery process.” Amidst the silence, Simpson is writing “strictly as a lyricist on mute” alongside his collaborators.

He wrote, “This has also affected my ability to complete the album and polish up the next singles. I’ve just been prescribed another 2 weeks of silence in hopes of avoiding a surgery which demands a much longer recovery process.

“I’m back in the studio now writing strictly as a lyricist on mute with my collaborators, and hearing/writing my vocal melodies on my guitar (which I will eventually replace with my voice when I’m able to). Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

Simpson concluded the post, “I’d like to bring you on the journey. I’ve been extremely up and down, but am now reframing this as a realignment for the long-term good. In the meantime, should I start sharing some of what I’ve already finished?”

Simpson returned to his singing career in 2024, after unfortunately failing to qualify for that year’s Olympic Games. His singing career was on hold as he pursued his sporting dreams.

In 2022, he sang the National Anthem at the Melbourne Cup with the Melbourne Gospel Choir. Following his performance, Simpson revealed that music remained a “massive” part of his life.

Earlier this year, Simpson signed with BMG in partnership with Range Music for his future releases. His latest single, Baby Blue, was released in late March.
