Stadiums Tasmania boss James Avery stated that Foo Fighters aren't playing the show "to make money," but have a history of "playing in regions that don’t get large-scale events like this."

Foo Fighters will play the “biggest concert” Launceston has ever seen when they touch down in Tasmania for a one-off gig in January 2026.
Announced yesterday, tour promoters Frontier Touring have locked in Foo Fighters’ first Tasmanian show in over a decade, with the US rockers performing in Launceston for the first time.
The show will take place on Saturday, 24 January, at UTAS Stadium in Launceston. Brisbane rockers Full Flower Moon Band and local psych rock outfit Spooky Eyes will open the show.
Stadiums Tasmania boss James Avery revealed that the Tasmanian government and the Launceston City Council are paying $650,000 for Foo Fighters to play at UTAS Stadium in January—$500,000 is coming from the state, and $150,000 from the council.
Avery also told the ABC that the show would likely cost the state an extra “couple hundred thousand dollars” to host, but the exact figure is unconfirmed.
“We’ll know what that is when we get to the end of the process, and we’ll be making that available publicly,” Avery said.

He stated that Foo Fighters are “very unique” when asked whether Tasmanians would be surprised by the price to lock in the band. In 2023, the Western Australian government subsidised two exclusive Coldplay concerts to the tune of $8 million.
“The band is not undertaking this to make money,” Avery said. “They have a history of and really have a focus on playing in regions and locations that don’t get large-scale events like this.”
In March 2022, Foo Fighters played a one-off show at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium, becoming the first international band to perform in a stadium in Australia after the borders opened, following strict measures undertaken to control the COVID-19 pandemic.
The upcoming show marks the Foo Fighters’ 14th visit to Australia, following their last visit in November/December 2023. That visit followed the 2022 show and a 2018 headline tour.
Having taken a year away from touring between 2024 and 2025, September marked a full-scale return for the Foo Fighters, who released the new single Today’s Song earlier this year and Asking For A Friend in October, in which they also unveiled new drummer Ilan Rubin.
