HorrorshowSydney-bred hip hop duo Horrorshow has joined forces with contemporaries Jimblah, Thelma Plum and Urthboy to send a message to the nation with brand new track and anti-racism rallying cry Any Other Name.
Written and recorded at Writers Block Studio over the weekend in a flash of inspiration brought on by the fallout of the Adam Goodes saga, with Mitch Kenny putting in time at the mixing desk, the song came to life "after an extremely difficult week of soul-searching and heated debate on and off the field", and carries an indelible strain of frustration and justifiable anger on its shoulders throughout its verses, buoyed by Plum's dulcet vocal work over the chorus.
The verse lyrics are open, affecting and honest but scathing, informed by real-world experience and years of being shouted down — and, yet, despite the sense of societal dissatisfaction that permeates its vibe, all the song is really asking for, at its core, is for people to take a long, hard look at themselves and their behaviour and truly evaluate if they should be proud of their behaviour and, moreover, their insistence that it's not at all problematic to begin with.
Have a listen to the track below and start reflecting, folks.
