"We feel like today summed up what we know and love about this city: unwavering support, a rich arts scene, musical hits and a touch of glitz.”
Celebrating the abundance of creative gold in the region, the seventh annual Gold Coast Music Awards took place over the weekend with an exciting new format, a new physical home and plenty of live performances in the mix.
Hosted at the Gold Coast's HOTA, aka Home of the Arts, the 2021 edition saw 500 Queensland musicians, music industry figures and fans descend on the red carpet event, with thousands more tuning in via a national livestream to catch the award presentations and some brilliant performances from Beckah Amani, Karl S. Williams and Mass Sky Raid.
In a year where so many in the industry continue to be plagued with unknowns and challenges, the showing of celebration and solidarity for the local scene on display over the weekend certainly offered a beacon of hope for the broader music industry - and the fact that the ceremony could even take place was not lost on the Gold Coast Music Awards director Chloe Popa.
“We’re still overwhelmed that the Awards actually happened," Popa said. "It was devastating when our presenting partner, SPRINGTIME Festival, had to postpone, but to have 500 musicians and music lovers in the room today was magic.
“With incredible performances by Beckah Amani, Karl S. Williams, DENNIS., Massy Sky Raid and daste, we feel like today summed up what we know and love about this city: unwavering support, a rich arts scene, musical hits and a touch of glitz.”
With a huge array of local talent nominated for the 2021 awards, there, of course, could only be one winner per category, with first time nominee Beckah Amani scooping up Song Of The Year and Video Of The year for her smooth and powerful track STANDARDS, while hip hop artist Jesswar, country star Casey Barnes and psych rockers Peach Fur beat out some very heavy competition, with Barnes retaining his Artist Of The Year title once again in 2021.
