How do you feel about Daddy Yankee's 2004 smash hit, Gasolina? Whether you love or hate the original, you’re guaranteed to be stunned by Future Static’s take on a song we all know well.

Melbourne’s Future Static give Gasolina what all cover songs need: breakdowns, guitar squeals, screams, a sung bridge amongst the chaos, and representing a band member’s upbringing with something completely different.

Vocalist Amariah Cook, born in Melbourne and raised in Barcelona, doesn’t only connect with her Spanish roots but provides a wholly electrifying and somewhat unhinged vocal performance to the Puerto Rican hit.

The band’s turbo-charged, metal fuelled cover of Gasolina began as an accident.

Lead guitarist Ryan Qualizza was working on a left-field cover for a homegrown charity vinyl release, which just so happened to be something bigger for Cook, taking her back to her childhood in the L'Hospitalet de Llobregat district on the outskirts of Barcelona, home to a large number of people of Latin American descent, immersed in the reggaeton musical culture. Reinventing a song as ubiquitous as Gasolina became a challenge she couldn’t resist.

“Over there, the metalheads hate reggaeton, so bringing those two mortal enemies together was an entertaining idea for me. I've always had a part in my soul that wanted to try to merge these two socially and musically opposing groups together,” Cook explained.

“Apart from connecting me to my Spanish roots, doing this cover also meant blending our lives together. Even though we were all raised in such vastly different lifestyles and places, it is one of those songs which was extremely popular worldwide, and with this cover, we strive to bring back that sense of planetary community.”

You can check out the music video below. Directed by Colin Jeffs (Make Them Suffer, Alpha Wolf), the director said in a press release, “I am always about doing cool, hype clips that turn heads, and I felt like this song was the perfect tune to do a head-turner to.

“We tried to pay homage to the original video, with it being sexy and fun. We tried to modernise that and add our own flavour and flair to it. I think we did an excellent job of reimagining the song whilst still keeping a lot of the flavour of what it was like back in the day.”

Cook joined Future Static in 2021. As one of Melbourne’s most talked about breakthrough acts, the band released the scorching Venenosa last year, and with Gasolina, they’re guaranteed to reach even greater heights.

Future Static's Gasolina is on vinyl, featuring on the charity vinyl release, The Better Sessions - Volume 2, where Australian alternative and heavier artists cover Owl City, Bloc Party, M.I.A., and more. You can purchase the vinyl - with all profits going to Beyond Blue - here.
