The owners remain confident.

The future of Newcastle's iconic Cambridge Hotel is now unclear as the venue is up for sale after 25 years in operation.

According to Newcastle Herald, the Hunter Street venue is being marketed to developers with aims to make way for new apartments.

The Cambridge has played host to a number of memorable gigs, including hometown band Silverchair, Childish Gambino getting booed from the stage in 2015 and a surprise gig from PNAU this past March.

Co-owner John Palmieri is confident however that the sale does not spell the end for the Cambridge and that the venue will instead feature as part of the new developments.

"We're hoping the developer that ultimately acquires it will see fit to make sure they maintain a hotel within the complex," Palmieri said.

"I'm pretty confident that will happen. There would be nothing to replace it in terms of what it can offer."

The Cambridge Hotel management took to Facebook earlier today to reaffirm their stance, saying they "have no intentions of going anywhere anytime soon".

"We have been in discussions with the current and potential new owners of The Cambo to do everything we can to keep Newcastle’s most iconic live music venue true to it's name."

The statement concludes, " It is clear to us that Newcastle loves live music, or any music for that matter. We love music too, and have no intention of shutting this party down."
