Kylie MinogueKylie Minogue has reflected on the origins of her recent April Fool’s Day prank which undoubtedly saw a solid portion of her fanbase taken in by the Melbourne musician’s humour.
For the uninitiated, Minogue tricked her fans on April 1st by teasing the release of a new EP titled Hot Air Balloon For Two. However, upon actually clicking through to the link offered to fans to listen to the EP, fans were instead directed to the video for her 1992 single, What Kind Of Fool (Heard All That Before).
In a new clip shared to Instagram, Minogue reflected on the nascent prank, explaining how it was Will Ferrell who helped inspire the prank.
As Minogue recalled, she’d found herself laughing at a 2019 appearance from Ferrell on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where Ferrell’s Ron Burgandy character recounted an experience in which he supposedly got into a knife fight with Minogue.
“I couldn't take you as a Kylie Minogue fan to be really honest," host Jimmy Fallon admitted, before urging Ferrell to name one of her songs. "I'll name you 50," Ferrell replied. "Take Me To The River, Hot Air Balloon For Two, and Sydney Nights.”

“Then the idea just hit me,” Minogue recalled. “I thought, ‘Wait, this could be fun.’ So I mocked up a whole EP, got @teamkylie to repost the clip – just to plant the seed.
“Then I dropped a little teaser on my story,” she adds. “Midnight, mysterious. The clock hits 12. Boom. My brand new EP Hot Air Balloon For Two is out now. Full track list, everything.”
While some fans claimed that Minogue had “won the internet with her April Fool’s joke”, others were a little disappointed it wasn’t new music from the pop veteran.
“ Oh my God, this absolutely sent me,” Minogue said to her fans. “You know I love you all, really.”
As it stands, Minogue’s last studio album arrived in 2024 by way of the chart-topping Tension II, while a new edition of 2015’s Kylie Christmas arrived last year.
Frankly, the real April Fool’s Day joke would be to actually record an EP called Hot Air Balloon For Two (maybe with Will Ferrell?), but we’ll have to wait until next year to see if that eventuates.
