Continuing their swift surge onto the scene, Eora/Sydney-based heavy-wave trio Five Island Drive have delivered their fervent third single ‘Lost Cosmonauts’ – self-produced and mixed by band member Kim Quint and mastered by Grant Berry (Stand Atlantic, Hot Milk, Boston Manor).
‘Lost Cosmonauts’ executes its fundamental message about the paradox of growth through vocalist Frankie Jean’s trademark vocal delivery, with its astral themes accentuated by spacey synths and the guitar’s climactic chords. The final touch of the drum’s slow groove sways the song into an unexpected leftfield turn as the bridge shows its hip-hop influences over a change of time signature, coursing towards cathartic respite with the song’s tranquil, emotive outro.
The accompanying video clip, directed by Kim and Frankie, and filmed by Susan Lumsdon at Sydney Props Studios on Gadigal and Wangal land of the Eora Nation, features the band members crash landing on a desert island and proceeding with the challenges of survival. Paying homage to The Mighty Boosh, SpongeBob SquarePants, Madagascar and Castaway to name a few, the music video centres around comedic tropes amidst visual commentary on the stereotypes between vocalists and their bandmates.
“’Lost Cosmonauts’ is a song about the stark change in friendship circles that can sometimes come after dramatic personal growth,” comments Frankie. “In order to move forward emotionally, the hardest decisions to make can be those that move you away from people who no longer share your core beliefs. These changes - no matter how crucial - are often followed by a lengthy period of loneliness, where you feel like you're drifting isolated in space so far from where you came from; drifting like a Lost Cosmonaut: a phenomenon that allegedly occurred during the Soviet Union's first attempts at human spaceflight.”
‘Lost Cosmonauts’ is the third single from Five Island Drive’s upcoming debut EP ‘White Rose’ – due for release on Friday, July 15. In celebration of the release, the band will perform a debut headliner at the Gallery Bar in Sydney's Oxford Art Factory. “The ‘White Rose’ EP tackles allyship in many forms,” explains Frankie. “Activism, self-allyship, critiquing performative-only action, and removing people from your life that refuse to alter their damaging beliefs; and the middle of the EP contains a powerful speech in Sophie Scroll’s own words that sum up the entire meaning of this collection of songs. Narrow streets lead to the same place as wide avenues, and a little candle burns itself out just like a flaming torch does. We all can choose our own way to burn.”
