Perth’s country-rock songwriter Finn Pearson confronts the complexities of emotional repression among men in his new single Boys Don’t Cry.

Boys Don’t Cry combines raw lyricism with gripping musical elements, reminiscent of songs like Dead Flowers by The Rolling Stones. With the likes of The Eagles and Chris Stapleton influencing Pearson’s sound, the song descends with a harmonic choir outro and a lush guitar solo, blending timeless rock arrangements with contemporary craftsmanship.

Pearson beautifully illustrates a candid and vulnerable message, addressing how men are stifled by gender norms.

“Boys Don't Cry really gets to the heart of my experience of Australian masculine culture,” Pearson explained. “Particularly with generations born and raised into the 80s and 90s, there's a strong sense that expressing any emotion besides anger or (perhaps humour) is weak or just ‘not what blokes do.’

He continued, “I wrote [Boys Don’t Cry] as both a critique and an expression of empathy for people trapped in that situation. The song tracks a nameless man in the aftermath of some personal catastrophe attempting to reckon with an upbringing of emotional repression in the only way he knows how, through substance use and half-hearted appeals to a barely-believed religion.

“The writing approach and the resultant alt-country feel emerged very organically. I think it somehow felt right to have themes like this expressed through a genre that often promotes 'traditional' masculine values."
