EXCLUSIVE: POND On Their Top Five Favourite Touring Memories

"...only to be consoled and hugged by Danny Devito. Highlight of my life."

More Pond Pond

POND have had a pretty big few years.

Just in the past one alone, they've sold out shows across the globe and have played at some of the biggest festivals, including the likes of Coachella, Primaverra, Splendour In The Grass, Reading and more. This year, they're heading to the States for a 14-date headlining tour and to play at Bonnaroo, Boston Calling and The Governors Ball festivals.

This week, they're off around the country to thrill Aussie crowds at Laneway Festival, but not before sharing their favourite touring memories with theMusic.com.au. Check them out below.

My favourite touring memory was playing a terrible show (at least personally) at Coachella 2013, walking off irritated and bummed out, only to be consoled and hugged by Danny Devito. Highlight of my life.

I guess one that stands out in my mind is when Tame Impala were playing Fuji Rock in Japan along with My Bloody Valentine who we had befriended on a previous tour. They are lovely peeps and played incredibly well and so, so loud. But my story takes place on the day after the show. I was staying behind in Tokyo solo for a few days and it turned out so were My Bloody Valentine.

The night after Fuji Rock, we all went out to Robot Restaurant — an underground basement show involving elaborate story lines of animals in their woodland home having to defend it against the man-made machine of deforestation and the destruction told through dance, large moving robots and lasers. After the Robot Restaurant, we all went out to a bar where I got absolutely Slurms McKenzied, missed my bar stool all together attempting to sit down (which I'm still embarrassed about) and was driven back to my hotel by the band and politely ushered out of their taxi, never to meet again. Thanks, you lovely peeps for getting me home x

One time when we were playing the Coachella festival, we were taken out to this mansion in the desert that was lined with baby marijuana plants and gifted huge show bags full of different types of weed and weed related products. They had a chef serving up spiked treats and we lazed and blazed by the pool out the back.

Gizz Fest in melbourne — the mosh barrier broke in the middle of our set and we had to stop while it was fixed. To fill the time, Shiny Joe began a ruthless rendition of One More Time by Daft Punk, mimicking the Auto-Tune by slapping his throat. Watching the kids continue moshing in a circle pit and crowdsurfing to this was one of my highlights of touring.

Once we were in Japan and saw The Flaming Lips. Me and Joe were dressed in gecko costumes. The folks on the opposite side of the stage were dressed as polar bears. We had both eaten small pieces of paper earlier that day and I cried my eyes out as Wayne [Coyne, frontman] got thousands of Japanese fans to silently hold the peace sign in the air. They opened with Race For The Prize, I think. When I left the stage and realised we were still just in a big ass warehouse convention centre thing, I fell on the ground and totally broke down crying. It was fucked but then Wayne came and gave me a big warm hug. It was the first time we'd met them and we love them to this day.

POND have just dropped their latest single, Fire In The Water, which is available as part of the deluxe digital release of their album The Weather. Check it out below.
