The first trailer for Sofia Coppola’s new film about Priscilla Presley has dropped. However, what’s supposed to be a celebratory event has become controversial as the Elvis Presley Estate butt heads with Priscilla herself in a war of words.
The film, entitled Priscilla, is based on Priscilla’s 1985 memoir, Elvis And Me. Starring Bad Times At The El Royale's Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla Presley and Euphoria’s Jacob Elordi as Elvis Presley, the movie is due for release in October.
The synopsis for Priscilla will tell “the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage,” per Pitchfork. In a recent interview with Vogue, Coppola said, “I was just so interested in Priscilla’s story and her perspective on what it all felt like to grow up as a teenager in Graceland.
“She was going through all the stages of young womanhood in such an amplified world – kinda similar to Marie Antoinette.”
Elvis and Priscilla first met in 1959, when the Suspicious Minds singer was 24, and his future wife was 14. When she turned 21 in 1967, the pair were married and welcomed their daughter, Lisa Marie, two years later. The marriage ended in 1973, and by August 1977, the music icon passed away.
In response to the release of the Priscilla trailer, the Elvis Presley Estate and Priscilla traded barbs in the media, with the former saying, “It feels like a college movie. The set designs are just horrific, it's not what Graceland looks like.”

In a statement to TMZ, Priscilla added, “I am very excited to see the interpretation of my book by the masterful Sofia Coppola. She has such an extraordinary perspective, and I have always been such an admirer of her work. I'm certain this movie will take everyone on an emotional journey.”

With its focus on Priscilla, Coppola’s film couldn’t be more different to last year’s Elvis, directed by Baz Luhrmann. The biopic stars Austin Butler and Oscar-winning Tom Hanks. It explores the life and music of Elvis Presley (played by Butler), seen through the lens of his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker (played by Hanks).
The story sees the relationship evolve and span 20 years, from Presley's rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom.
Earlier this year, Lisa Marie Presley passed away at 54 years old after suffering a possible cardiac arrest, TMZ initially reported.
