More Dua Lipa More Dua Lipa

After bringing out some more alternative special guests on stage for her Radical Optimism tour of the US, Dua Lipa selected the most indie artist yet on Thursday (16 October).

While performing in San Francisco last weekend, the New Rules singer welcomed Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong to the stage, where the duo performed Wake Me Up When September Ends. And on her final night in Los Angeles last week, Lipa was joined by No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani for a rendition of Don’t Speak, an experience she described as a “childhood dream come true.”

Those two artists are on the more alternative side compared to Lipa’s pop music, but on Thursday, she welcomed someone a bit different to the stage: Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard, in his home city of Seattle, for a stunning version of I Will Follow You Into The Dark.

Lipa introduced the song and Gibbard by telling the audience that after touching on “so many different artists and genres” with her special guests and covers, she wanted to end the North American tour with a song alongside an “indie legend.”

She added, “I love this song for so many reasons, but really because I feel like it just really defines what love is in such a pure form, of wanting to follow someone to the very end.”

Dua Lipa brought her Radical Optimism tour to Australia and New Zealand in March and April.

In Australia, she covered Kylie Minogue’s eternal classic, Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, and Natalie Imbruglia’s cover of Torn and threw in some unexpected covers with AC/DC’s Highway To Hell and INXS’s Never Tear Us Apart.

Aside from the covers, Lipa was joined by special guests for four nights, paying tribute to them by performing their songs by their side. She sang Rush with Troye Sivan, Riptide with Vance Joy, The Less I Know The Better with Kevin Parker (of Tame Impala fame), and Big Jet Plane with Angus Stone.

In New Zealand, she covered Lorde’s Royals and was joined by Crowded House frontman Neil Finn for a “pinch me” moment of covering Don’t Dream It’s Over.
