Darren Hayes has been on a long road to recovery since breaking his jaw back in March.

In April, the Australian singer-songwriter revealed that he suffered a “terrible accident” a month earlier.

Hayes detailed a harrowing experience in which he fainted after getting out of bed, losing consciousness three times. The “blunt force trauma” of his falls was so severe that he wound up snapping his jawbone “in half.” He wrote that he broke nine teeth and suffered extreme pain on the left side of his head upon waking up in a pool of blood.

Hayes then had reconstructive surgery in which “incredible surgeons inserted a titanium brace” to reconnect his jawbone. In the meantime, his mouth had to be “wired shut for a minimum of eight weeks” as he healed.

Months after the health scare, Hayes has shared a health update on social media.

“I’ve been very private about how difficult my road to recovery has been since my injury in March, when I broke my jaw and broke a dozen or so teeth,” he began.

Revealing that post-op, his mouth was wired shut for three months and he had to eat liquid food through a straw, Hayes stated that he “gained a lot of weight” since he couldn’t exercise during recovery.

“Besides the pain of the injury, it was emotionally challenging, especially in the wake of losing my Mother,” he continued, before praising his trainer, Josh Hackford, and the team at the Glove and Crown Gym in Los Angeles, for “slowly rebuilding my physical health and self-esteem.”

In a video posted to social media, Hayes showed Hackford “going easy” on him as he tried not to faint during his training.

Before the terrifying fall, Hayes had been experiencing light-headedness and fainting spells. Back in April, he said he was aiming to find out why he’d been fainting, ruling out heart issues, anything to do with his arteries, or a brain tumour. Hayes added that he doesn’t drink alcohol or do drugs, so this was a “complete shock.”

Hayes released two classic albums with Savage Garden: 1997’s self-titled LP and the 1999 smash-hit Affirmation.

Aside from Savage Garden, Hayes has released five solo albums, each becoming more ambitious than the last. Starting with 2002’s Spin, Hayes went on to unveil The Tension And The Spark (2004), This Delicate Thing We’ve Made (2007), Secret Codes And Battleships (2011), and 2022’s Homosexual.
