Daniel Topp, through his new one man pop-punk project, The Desperation, released his debut single earlier this month, titled 'EightFiveNinetySeven'.

For those unaware, Topp has had a lengthy stint in the Australian punk and hardcore scene playing in bands such as The Vagrants, Godnose, The Shortfall, The City Shakeup and he was most recently the drummer for The Strums. But this new DIY band is simply just Topp himself, being as forthcoming as possible.

For 'EightFiveNinetySeven' focuses in on the heartbreak that came on the day that Topp sadly lost his father to a heart attack. In honour of his late father's passing in 1997, and in order to never forget this tragic and significant event in his life, this song was released on the 20th anniversary of his own father's death - 08/05/2017. Hence the title of the song.

Culled from this project's forthcoming debut album - titled 'Rangeville' - this song sets the melancholic tone for the album's overarching theme; the loss of a young boyʼs old man and the years of depression, anxiety and sheer desperation that followed such a terrible passing. Yet in true pop-punk form, The Desperation's upbeat punk tunes are lyrically and thematically honest and heartfelt on their subject matter ("Laying there at the bottom of the stairs/Stairway to heaven, it doesn't seem fair"), and like many similar bands, offering plenty of catchy hooks and power chords at the same time.

While raising further awareness of depression may be a moot point in today's world - what with countless bands tacklings this weighty subject and with TV shows like 13 Reasons Why existing -  Topp has nobly teamed up with the national mental health charity beyondblue for this debut release. As such, 100% of the proceeds from the pre-sale packs of 'EightFiveNinetySeven' will be donated to beyondblue and the amazing work they do for many Australians in need of emotional and mental support.

Physical copies of The Desperation's debut single can be snagged here or you can pick it up on iTunes - either way, it is going towards a noble cause, folks.

At the risk of being far too obligatory, please know there are a handful of avenues - including beyondblue - open to you or anyone you may know that's struggling with depression. For more info on some of these organisations, please click here
