Taylor Swift's 'Anti-Hero' Knocked From #1 On ARIA Singles Chart

12 December 2022 | 12:00 pm | Gavin Ryan

Meanwhile, 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' is closing in on the top spot.

More Taylor Swift More Taylor Swift

Of the fifteen #1 singles for 2022, seven have now returned to the #1 slot, as this week the Sam Smith and Kim Petras duet Unholy resurrects its chart-topping sojourn.

Unholy first logged four weeks at the singles summit from October 3rd to the 24th, and now like our across-the-ditch-cousins New Zealand we've returned the song to the #1 slot, where this week the track is spending a ninth overall week at the top of the NZ Singles chart. The song is also sitting at #2 in Canada this week, #4 in The U.S.A. and due to the massive influx of seasonal titles, it drops drastically in England (16 to #37) and Ireland (13 to #26).

I also noticed a trend for the returned tracks, there are seven actual returned tracks, two of which did so twice, so that makes nine overall returns to #1 during 2022, and of those nine, six were by British acts, Elton John and Dua Lipa (returned twice; January & February), Glass Animals (March), Harry Styles (twice also; May and August), Kate Bush (July) and now Sam Smith (December), while there was also Mariah Carey's January return (US act) and Stay for Kid Laroi (Oz) and Justin Bieber (Canadian) {Jan-Feb}.

Sam's tally of weeks at #1 during this decade now increases to five in total, while his two #1's have now tallied seven overall weeks at the top, moving him up to equal 79th on the 'Most Weeks at #1: Singles (1940 to 2022)' listing alongside Ace of Base, Anthony Callea, Robert Palmer and Justin Timberlake who've all had seven weeks at #1 from two chart-topping singles.

So after six weeks atop the ARIA Singles Chart, Taylor Swift's Anti-Hero dips one spot to #2, while it also loses its top spot in England (1 to #5) and Ireland (1 to #2), but maintains its lead in The U.S.A. and Canada (both fifth week). The song that overtakes Taylor in England is the Mariah Carey seasonal-single All I Want for Christmas is You (third overall week at #1 in England), which locally it leaps up again, this time eight places to land at #3, logging now it's 16th week within the Top 10 (since it started in 1994). The track is also holding at #1 in Germany (11th overall week) and jumps up in Ireland (6 to #3), New Zealand (re-entry at #2), The U.S.A. (5 to #2) and Canada (on hold at #5). Mariah's track is now logging its eleventh consecutive year of landing a Top 50 berth, while it's also the sixth year in a row that it's made it back into the Top 10, and if it hits the top again soon, it'll be it's fifth consecutive year hitting the #1 slot, while if it does so before Christmas actually occurs, it will be the first time it's claimed a #1 spot prior to Christmas Day (so we'll have to wait and see).

Once the Xmas deluge is over, I predict in the new year, we'll see Meghan Trainor landing her third #1 single in Australia, but for this week, her latest Top 5 single, Made You Look, is back down one spot to #4, while the track is newly certified as Gold (●) in sales. And with their March 2023 tour now four months away, the OneRepublic track I Ain't Worried is back up two places to #5, and at 21 weeks within the Top 10, the track is now equal 17th on the listing for 'Most Weeks within the Top 10', while current #7 on that listing now goes to Harry Styles with As it Was, down one spot to #10 nationally and logging a 33rd week within the Top 10 (the same amount as Shivers by Ed Sheeran).

Dipping two places each are I'm Good (Blue) for David Guetta and Bebe Rexha, followed by Miss You for Oliver Tree and Robin Schulz to #6 and #7, respectively, while the biggest slide within the Top 10 is a three-place decline to #9 for Drake and 21 Savage with Rich Flex. A new entry at #8 sees the first of three Top 50 entries this week for Metro Boomin' from his second studio album Heroes & Villains (TW-5), as coming in at #8 is Creepin' featuring The Weeknd and 21 Savage as guest artists. The new entry becomes only the second Top 50 placement for Metro Boomin', his first Top 10 entry and now his fifth Top 100 placement also, with Metro and 21 Savage (along with Drake) previously scoring a Top 50 single in Mr. Right Now (HP-39, Oct. 2020) (more info on his other entries and tallies in the new entries section).

HERE COMES SANTA'S CLAWS

There are five songs within the Top 20 this week that are seasonal songs, and seven within the Top 50, too, with the aforementioned Mariah Carey jumping to #3, her biggest competition is always Wham! with Last Christmas, which this week sleds up nineteen places to #11, heading for its potential fifth year in a row to return to the Top 10. The track has also jumped up the charts in England (9 to #3), Ireland (8 to #4), New Zealand (return at #6), U.S.A. (23 to #10) and Canada (15 to #7) and dipped slightly in Germany (2 to #3).

With Michael Bublé seeing his Christmas album jump into the Top 10 this week (36 to #8), he has two Top 50 Xmas tunes this week, with It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas (47 to #13; NZ #12 return) and a return to the Top 100 at #48 for Holly Jolly Christmas (LW-151, HP-19x2 {Jan 3, 2022 and Dec. 30th, 2019}). Three of last week's lower-50 entries leap up into the Top 20 and Top 30 this week, starting with Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee (56 to #15 here; 18 to #6 in England; 12 to #9 in Ireland; #4 return in New Zealand; 6 to #3 in U.S.A. and 8 to #6 in Canada), which has only ever held one week within the Top 10 at #8 last christmas.

Ariana Grande's Santa Tell Me leaps up thirty-five spots to #17, which hit #5 last year and #6 in 2020, so it's aiming for #5 or higher this season (U.S. #24 re-entry, Canada #36 return), and lastly the oldest of the Xmas-tunes, 1958's Jingle Bell Rock for Bobby Helms shimmies up forty-seven place to land at #21, having peaked at #13 last season, while it also rises in England 36 to #19; Ireland 28 to #16; U.S. 9 to #5; Canada 16 to #9 and returns to the chart in N.Z. #19. With three more weeks of seasonal tunes possibly hitting the chart, we should see more arrive or {santa}claw{s} their way up next week.

UP

The first non-seasonal track to climb outside of the Top 10 is a one-place rise to #19 for Cold Heart (PNAU Remix) for Elton John and Dua Lipa, after which twelve chart-rungs lower is the next climbing single, Lizzo's About Damn Time, up four spots to #31, possibly thanks to her current documentary Love, Lizzo screening on streaming services.

After cracking their one-year chart anniversary last week, the Lost Frequencies and Calum Scott track Where Are You Now rises again, this time up four spots to #34, while the only new peak within the Top 50 this week is a one place rise to #42 for Rema with Selena Gomez on their collaborative track Calm Down. Lastly, with the passing on December 1st of Fleetwood Mac member Christine McVie, the band's current charting single Dreams has rebounded fifteen places this week to land at #46, its first re-appearance within the Top 50 since August 22nd, with the track still uncertified at 116 weeks within the Top 100 (since it returned on Oct. 5th, 2020) {it originally spent 16 weeks on the chart in 1977}.

DOWN

Two songs leave the Top 10 this week, with recent tourist here Steve Lacy and his Bad Habit (HP-x2, WI10-17, now 2x▲Platinum) dropping four places to #12, and then down six spots to #16 is Eliza Rose and Interplanetary Criminal with B.O.T.A. (Baddest Of Them All) (HP-4x2, WI10-8), which is followed by a five-place decline to #18 for Cuff It by Beyoncé and a two-place dip to #20 for Sunroof by Nicky Youre and dazy

Falling seven places each are Under the Influence by Chris Brown (15 to #22, now 2x▲Platinum), Something in the Orange by Zach Bryan (16 to #23), while Stay for Kid Laroi and JB dips one to #24 (now 12x▲Platinum); Ed Sheeran's recent rises turn back around this week with Shivers down three to #25 and Bad Habits dips two to #33. The two weeks that Dean Lewis spent at #14 with his latest single, How Do I Say Goodbyeare over, as the song tumbles twelve places to #26, while it also falls in England (33 to #55), Ireland (21 to #36), Norway (12 to #27), Switzerland (7 to #13), Austria (21 to #36), Germany (24 to #52), with a small dip in The Netherlands (3 to #4) and a slight rise in Canada (66 to #65).

Another two-weeks-at-a-peak also declines, down six places to #27 is Tom Odell with Another Love (HP-21x2), followed by an eleven-place slide to #28 for Lizzo's 2 Be Love (Am I Ready). There are six place drops for LF System with Afraid to Feel and I Like You (A Happier Song) for Post Malone and Doja Cat to #32 and #35, respectively. The Killers tour rolls on again, with their last shows occurring this upcoming week, which is why they only decline four places this week to #37 with Mr. Brightside

While all around The Killers are a bunch of massive dropping tracks, starting with a twelve-place slump to #36 for Nicki Minaj's Super Freaky Girl, then Lewis Capaldi sees a thirteen spot fall to #38 for Forget Me as his new single Pointless lands a Top 20 debut in England and Ireland this week. Taylor Swift's Lavender Haze reduces by twenty places this week, down to #39, after which are smaller drops for Levitating by Dua Lipa (32 to #40) and The Kind of Love We Make for Luke Combs (34 to #41). Rosa Linn and her SNAP track fall seventeen places to #45, Sweater Weather for The Neighbourhood melts seven to #47 and Ferrari by James Hype and Miggy Dela Rosa backs down the chart-driveway eight places to park at #50. Rihanna's Lift Me Up was at #27 last week and leaves the Top 50 this week.
