Bon Iver's Justin Vernon says he made a "huge mess" after he criticised his 2018 collab track with Eminem, Fall, on Twitter just a day after its release.

Vernon tweeted that he was "not a fan" of the song's message, in which Eminem takes shots at a number of other rappers including Tyler, The Creator and Joe Budden.

"This is not the time to criticize youth, it’s the time to listen. To act," Vernon said last September.

"It is certainly not the time for slurs. Wish they would have listened when we asked them to change it."

In a new interview on Beats 1 with Zane Lowe, the Wisconsin-born songwriter discussed the tweets when asked about his attitude towards how people communicate on social media.

“I made that huge mess out of the Eminem song. I was just in a car wash, and I just tweeted. It’s like, what was I doing?" Vernon said.

"I should’ve just probably chilled out and, like, actually just said, ‘Please don’t put this song out.'

"... It was very rude and I felt really bad about it.”
