Bad Bunny performed in Australia for the first time over the weekend, and tour promoters Live Nation have revealed that he broke a stadium attendance record while he was at it.

The singer and rapper – born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio – performed for two nights at Sydney’s ENGIE Stadium, bringing “close to 90,000 fans” to the venue across two sold-out shows. The concerts subsequently marked the “highest number of attendees ever” for a music event held at ENGIE Stadium.

Hans Schafer, a Senior Vice President of Global Touring at Live Nation, confirmed that 89,000 tickets were sold and told the Australian Financial Review that booking Bad Bunny in a stadium for his Australian debut wasn’t decided on “census data.”

“We look at consumption, streaming density, and engagement,” Schafer explained. “The culture was already present digitally, and the data gave us conviction.”

Schafer added that the Live Nation team “knew” Bad Bunny fans would travel to Sydney, and that the shows drew ticket holders from across Australia and New Zealand.

The SVP of Global Touring also confirmed that the final tickets that were available for Bad Bunny’s second show sold out “almost immediately” following the star’s Album of the Year win at the Grammy Awards, and the following week, headlining the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

“When the biggest act in the world plays on this side of the world, demand concentrates,” Schafer said.

Announcing his debut visit to Australia last May, Bad Bunny soon added a second show in Sydney due to massive demand. The demand only increased following his Super Bowl Halftime Show performance, which featured guest appearances from Shakira and Ricky Martin.

Bad Bunny’s Saturday performance at Sydney’s ENGIE Stadium was met with massive adulation from his local fanbase, launching with cuts such as LA MuDANZA and BAILE INoLVIDABLE.

Dropping in cuts such as Tití Me Preguntó, and special performances of PIToRRO DE COCO and UN PREVIEW for the Australian crowd, expected favourites such as DTMF, La Canción, and EoO also helped turn the high-profile show into one for the ages.
