Apple Discontinues The iPod After 21 Years

The iPod "redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared".

Apple has announced it is discontinuing its cult adored music player, the iPod Touch, bringing an end to the iPod series, a device that truly revolutionised the ways in which we consume music.

The iPod was first revealed in 2001 to huge fanfare, as Steve Jobs presented the new piece of technology on a stage in his trademark presentation style.

During that presentation, Jobs stated, "Music's a part of everyone's life. Music's been around forever. It will always be around," and that you could fit "1,000 songs in your pocket."

Now, Apple Music's streaming service library has over 90 million songs on it.

The iPod Classic was discontinued in 2014 and Apple last updated the iPod Touch in 2019. Many people are instantly triggered by the nostalgia of holding a Classic iPod, with its sticky jog wheel, big buttons and tiny screen.

Other popular models include the Nano, the screenless iPod Shuffle and the Mini.

As iPhones and streaming services became more and more popular, the iPod began to fade in popularity.

Greg Joswiak, the senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Apple, stated that the device "redefined how music is discovered, listened to, and shared."
