Amyl And The Sniffers returned to US television this week and brought their signature brand of raucous punk rock to the stage.

The Melbourne band made their US television debut on Late Night with Seth Meyers in 2022, and since then, they’ve experienced a meteoric rise internationally, even playing at Coachella this year. This time around, Amyl And The Sniffers performed during prime time on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.

Currently on tour across the US, the band stopped in New York to make their debut on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and performed their track Tiny Bikini from their most recent album, Cartoon Darkness.

During the performance, lead singer Amy Taylor represented Australian culture by rocking an absolutely iconic bikini top made of thongs (or flip-flops, for US readers). The band was also joined by RuPaul’s Drag Race stars from the Haus of Aja: Aja, Kandy Muse, and Dahlia Sin.

The band hosting drag queens on stage comes as two US states, Montana and Tennessee, explicitly restrict drag performances. Meanwhile, 16% of the LGBTQ+ population lives in states with laws about “adult” performances that could be used to target or restrict drag performances.

In a recent cover story interview with The Music, Amy Taylor revealed that Tiny Bikini explores bodily autonomy and peels back the layers of voyeurism and hypocrisy in the music industry (and it’s probably the most fun song you’ve heard about swimwear). She also stated that the riff comes first in the band’s songwriting.

“I’m always scribbling away little thoughts, but most of the time, the lyrics that we end up using are just lyrics that I’ll freestyle,” she said. “I might have an idea about a song, but then when I hear the guitar riff or the bass line, I’m like, ‘There’s no way I can make these the same thing.’ A lot of the time, the song’s energy speaks first, and then I’ll try and respond with lyrics.”

Amyl And The Sniffers toured across Australia in January and February. Since then, they received multiple nominations for this year’s AIR Awards and took home the prestigious Song of the Year award at the APRA Awards for U Should Not Be Doing That.
