Last year, Amy Shark completed the trifecta—working with all three members of blink-182—and made a lifelong dream come true. But it almost didn’t work out.

Sharing the story on ABC Illawarra with Lindsay McDougall, the pair discussed Shark’s solo acoustic tour (which started yesterday) before launching into a chat about her song, My Only Friend, featuring Tom DeLonge. During the chat, the I Said Hi singer revealed that the FBI almost stopped their collaboration from existing.

McDougall wrote on social media, “We had another chat just before Christmas, this time on ABC Radio NSW, and talked about regional touring, regional motor inns and a coupla pretty cool stories about the songs, including how the FBI almost stopped the one she made with Tom from Blink 182 from happening!”

“I had [that song] for so long, and it was called The Alien,” Shark began. “The hook was, ‘You’re the alien in the room,’ and I wanted Tom to be on it so bad. I was like, ‘This makes so much sense because he’s so into UFOs,’ and he loved it!”

She continued, “The timing was all off at the start because I wanted it on [previous album] Cry Forever.” However, she put that album out, content with already having Travis Barker on the album. Then, DeLonge told her the hook needed to be changed.

“He was like, ‘We’ve gotta change the hook because I’m so in this government thing and all this UFO stuff; I’m in so deep with these guys; I just don’t want to bring attention to it!”

McDougall quipped, “If you’ve signed an NDA that you’re not allowed to talk about aliens, you can’t sing the word ‘alien.’ That actually makes a lot of sense.”

Shark took on the challenge and ended up changing the hook so the pair would sing, “You’re my only friend in the room.”

In July 2023, former Air Force Intelligence Officer Major David Grusch testified in Congress and claimed the US government had secretly run a “multi-decade” program that allegedly found and captured “unidentified aerial phenomena.”

Fellow former Air Force Intelligence Officer David Fravor praised DeLonge and his To The Stars Academy Of Arts & Sciences for their work, including the footage the Academy filmed of UFOs.

“It was this organization that pressed the issue with leading Industry experts and USG officials, worked with Leslie Keane, Ralph Blumenthal and Helene Cooper to publish the articles in the NYT in Dec 2017, admitting the USG was looking at UAPs and removed the Stigma of the UFO topic which led to us being here today,” Fravor said.

Following the hearing, DeLonge posted on social media: “Tom Was Right: Aliens F**king Exist.”

Amy Shark is taking her Songs & Stories Tour to 20 towns across the country from this month into March. She’s touring in support of her latest album, Sunday Sadness.
