More Alex Lahey More Alex Lahey

Unstoppable Melbourne muso Alex Lahey has capitalised on a phenomenal showing at the recent Splendour In The Grass festival — as well as the growing buzz surrounding her recently released debut EP, B-Grade University — to sign with esteemed Aussie music publishing company Native Tongue.

In the lead-up to, and immediate wake of, B-Grade University's release, Lahey has only seen further acclaim slung her way, informed by assured and infectious single releases such as Let's Go Out and breakthrough jam You Don't Think You Like People Like Me. Even our reviewer was smitten with the extended player, describing it as "an ode to every twentysomething experiencing the mundanity of life".

With broad appeal and growing star power to match, it's little surprise to see a business such as Native Tongue take interest — and they've been keeping eyes on her for a while now, according to general manager Jamie Gough.

"I first saw Alex perform almost two years ago and was instantly taken by her lyrics and delivery," Gough said in a statement. "Even then, Alex had a clear idea of who she was as an artist and the messages she wished to convey.

"Alex has since blossomed with her writing and it's a genuine pleasure to be working with such an exciting talent throughout the formative stages of what will be a long career in this industry."

Lahey is similarly chuffed with the new arrangement, acknowledging the boon of having been picked up so early in her career.

"I couldn't be happier to officially be part of the Native Tongue family," she said in a statement. "As an artist who primarily identifies as a songwriter, Native Tongue's commitment to working with their writers to develop their skills and create opportunities makes me extremely excited for the future and all the hard work together!"

Said hard work isn't just an abstract concept set to take place at some unknown point in the future; Lahey's actually getting right down to it, heading out on tour with her buds in The John Steel Singers from Friday 19 August; see theGuide for all the details.
