SA Venue 'Sick' Of COVID Restrictions Gets Innovative Instead Of Closing

12 January 2022 | 8:03 am | Staff Writer

“We are sick of telling bands they need to reschedule or cancel and sick of our staff not being able to work with no financial support from any tier of government for them."

South Australia's government restrictions on dancing have been some of the harshest in the country throughout the pandemic and Adelaide UniBar has announced it would be transforming its venue to a COVID-safe format to keep the live music flowing.

The current restrictions would see the original format of the venue be cut down from a 500 person live music space to a capacity of only 87 which would have cancelled all live gigs indefinitely at UniBar.

Now, with the help of production partner Novatech, UniBar will move outside, building a stage in the Cloisters adjacent to the bar and will host 200 punters.

Venue booker Gareth Lewis stated: "We are sick of telling bands they need to reschedule or cancel and sick of our staff not being able to work with no financial support from any tier of government for them.

"The idea came about when we were forced to cancel our HomeBrewed Festival, we wanted to give just a few of the artists who were due to play there a gig.

"We have been playing ball and following the ever-changing rules that effect the live music industry more than any for almost 2 years now and it feels we are in a more hopeless position now than ever before.
