A new documentary about Avicii is in the works, with the project set to detail the late Swedish DJ's rise to fame while featuring "previously unreleased footage."

The project will be lead by Academy Award-winning film producer Lawrence Bender, known for his work on Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, while talent manager Orlando John will co-direct the film with Jonas Trukanas.

John said of the forthcoming project: “Avicii changed the music industry. People think they know the story, but they have really no clue as to what actually happened. I feel a profound responsibility to ensure that it’s told accurately and objectively."

"This documentary will give the audiences a deeper understanding of the brand that left an indelible mark on music and culture.”

Bender added, “What got me excited was not just the story of Avicii, but also the take Orlando had as a director. It’s that take that’s going to make this eye-opening."

While the film does not have a release date at the time of writing, according to Variety, the doco will feature previously unreleased footage and new interviews with Avicii’s family and friends, as well as fellow EDM stars such as Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell of Swedish House Mafia.

Last month marked five years since the death of Avicii - real name Tim Bergling - with members of the EDM community paying tribute to the music icon and Tomorrowland's One World Radio honouring his memory with Avicii Day.

Bergling died via suicide at the age of 28 while on holiday in Muscat, Oman, on April 20, 2018.

Just months prior to his death, in 2017, a documentary titled Avicii: True Stories directed by friend Levan Tsikurishvili was released, which detailed his struggles with mental health that lead him to cease touring in 2016.
