10 Things Australia Has Taught Yukon Blonde

"Stay out of abandoned farm houses or buildings."

Canadian indie rockers Yukon Blonde will be in town shortly for BIGSOUND 2015, one of very few international bands scoring a chance to play a showcase at the conference.

Australia can be a bit of a shock for foreigners (the weather's too warm, the beers are too cold, everyone's too awesome, you know the drill) so the five-piece put together ten things our fine pastures have taught the band, even before they hit the stage in Brisbane.

We're sure they'll be able to add another five things to the list once BIGSOUND is all wrapped up.

The band will be playing The Zoo on Wednesday, 9 September from 11.30pm to midnight.

1. Never underestimate the power of an undertow, we've been swept out sea at Bondi in seconds. Pretty sure my life flashed before my eyes.

2. Australian highway authorities don't take lightly to speeding. While being pulled over by two patrol cars when speeding to a gig, we accidentally pulled off to the wrong side of the road (as not being used to driving on the other side). The end result was a $700 ticket. OUCH!

3. Stay out of abandoned farm houses or buildings as it's quite possible to be inhabited by killer spiders or snakes.

4. The Virgin Airlines no baggage fee policy is the BEST!

6. Australia has all kinds of beers, Coopers, Cascades, Fosters, the list goes on...

7. That Avocado on toast makes for a delicious breakfast.

8. Takes 15 minutes for a pale Canadian to be absolutely blistered by the sun.

9. Never lock your keys in your car when playing the Peats Ridge Festival, takes forever for a tow truck to come to the rescue in that location!! (However when searching for a helping hand, I did meet Xavier Rudd and his crew, so that made it worth the wait.)

10. Thankful I'm not a smoker, as I've seen packs of cigarettes over $30 a pack in some cities.
