Brisbane singer-songwriter Jo Davie is back with her third single, Cemetery. Releasing the evocative track yesterday, Davie has provided The Music with a little treat - the premiere of Cemetery's accompanying music video.
Filmed and edited by Davie’s long-time friend, drummer and collaborator Caleb Colledge, the video is a moody affair, drenched in black and white.
Davie said, “We actually had a totally different idea for this song's music video that we were scheduled to film in the days leading up to Cyclone Alfred, but we had to pivot pretty quickly when we realised we wouldn't be able to film outside! So instead, we set up in a spare room at Caleb's house, and he had this idea of really leaning into the lyrics of the song, by having me write and paint them on the wall behind me to create a backdrop.
“He also suggested using the words to create arches, as a subtle nod to headstones, a la the song's title Cemetery. We chose to go black and white as well, given that my last videos have been really colourful, and with this being, in some ways, a more sombre song, it felt appropriate and unique!”

As for the track itself - produced with Sam Cromack of Ball Park Music - Cemetery is a testament to Davie’s songwriting ability, digging into deep-seated emotions.
“The song explores how we never know what other people are going through,” Davie shared. “For me, it’s about reflecting and processing old loss with a bit of perspective. Regarding the track as a whole, I'm really proud of this song lyrically. I wrote it about going for walks in the very large cemetery near my house, which I find to be a very peaceful setting for reflecting and processing - it's a good place to remind yourself of the bigger picture.”
Cemetery is the third single from Davie’s forthcoming debut EP, Nothing Comes Free - and to celebrate, she’s going on tour. Beginning in Canberra on May 1st, Davie will continue through Sydney, Melbourne, Warburton, Ipswich, Sunshine Coast, and Northern NSW, before closing the tour out on May 17th in Brisbane at Black Bear Lodge.
