'I Wanted My Album To Feel Bigger Than Just Music': Charley On 'The Chronicles Of A Serial Idealist'

Theatre Focus: The Wharf Revue

"There's a responsibility of character to take on, as they are drawn from living, public figures."

Answered by: Amanda Bishop (performer)

Describe your show in a tweet? High, middle & lowbrow political satire, music & a whiff of interpretive dance...

When you first read this show what stood out to you about the character? Well, there are about 40 characters in this show. ALL of them having sculpted our political and social landscape recently. So, there's a responsibility of character to take on, as they are drawn from living, public figures.

As a performer do you have a pre-show ritual? Eat (always, the show is very active) and chat to fellow cast and members about the day's news. This sometimes means script changes for that night's show! And after rehearsing those in the dressing room, I pretend to stretch and warm up.

What excites you about Australian theatre? Everything! It is constantly evolving. An audience can see a HUGE range of theatre, varying greatly in cost, any time, in our theatres. We learn about our (relatively young, in terms of this mix of peoples) culture through our theatre. Fabulous new and experienced creators are flooding the scenes at present, very exciting time!

When and where is your show? Merrigong Theatre Company, IPAC, 26 — 29 Aug; Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith, 3 — 5 Sep; Riverside Theatre, Parramatta 9 — 12 Sep; Canberra Theatre Centre, 15 — 26 Sep; Glen Street Theatre, Belrose 7 — 17 Oct; Sydney Theatre Company, 21 Oct — 19 Dec.
