Six Pack: Kingswood

They’ve just won the coveted triple j Unearthed Splendour In The Grass competition, and Melbourne indie rockers Kingswood are now heading to Queensland to promote their EP, Change Of Heart. Tony McMahon talks to drummer Justin Debrincat.

More Kingswood More Kingswood

Yeah Go Die is the high-rotation single from the EP, and Debrincat says it had to be there.

Yeah Go Die is a selfish mother-licker and wanted to be on this EP as well. We told it that it had already had a go, but it wasn't content with that EP. The Negative One EP kind of accidentally got put in a box and set on fire because it did something bad. Yeah Go Die made it out without any of us seeing it.”

So, what's the stereo situation for this tour? It all seems very democratic.

“Fergus is killing us with Todd Rundgren. He keeps pumping We've Been Mated, and thinks it was written about Kingswood, you know, about how close we are. Apart from Todd, we're all pretty open to an album each on the Apple iPod rotation system.”

Unusually, every member of the band sings on the Change Of Heart. Was this a plan or did it kind of just work out that way? Debrincat seems to indicate that it was a bit of both.

“Mango is a real Human Nature and Savage Garden fan, and has been hassling us for three years, and finally (for him) we got inspired. While we were recording, he brought in his live DVDs and put them on in the background and thought we'd be able to pull it off. So we gave it a crack, and I think it worked, yeah?”

Any special surprises planned for the upcoming Queensland show?

“We always have surprises. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all may be unleashed in Queensland. It's been released on a few private occasions. Maybe it will make a public appearance. Know why he's called Mango?”
