SINGLE PREMIERE: Bad French - Finley's Downfall

More Bad French More Bad French

Grab the hose, because there's fire around the corner.

Finley's Downfall is the newest single from emergent Central Coast dance-pop duo Bad French, and it is very likely going to be one of the damn tastiest things you put in your ears today; certainly, one of the smoothest by a mile.

Warm synths, offbeat bass pulses, jangly guitar and sweet, sweet man-vox float along effortlessly throughout, the song's inherent groove proving irresistible as layers widen and deepen, dulcet back-up vocals undulate in and out, and its hip-thrusting disco beats lead the listener on with come-hither swagger.

This li'l piece of aural velvet was recorded between the home studios of its members, frontman Daniel Forsyth and songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Michael Carney, and comes on the heels of a couple of other eagerly welcomed introductory efforts, Errol's Forest and Within You. Those tracks generated early momentum around the band online and on both community radio and triple j Unearthed, and, given its polish and many delights, it's probably a safe bet that Finley's Downfall could be the one that catapults them over to broader recognition and renown.

Enjoyably, there's more to the song's title and themes than just a catchy word pairing. As Carney explained in a statement, "The track was inspired by the downfall of Finley Quaye, an English dub artist I grew up listening to. The melodic idea came on a piano but I transferred it to some synths before Dan came along with the vocal lines to help it sound trés cooler.

"We swapped the session a few times between our two home studios until it all started clicking together and had a good friend Jean Gallows mix it all down."

The band are planning to keep on crafting new songs and hitting stages (and lawns and wherever will have them) around their stomping ground and in Sydney over the next few months, so be sure to give them the thumbs-up on Facebook and keep an eye out for their next musical treats and travels, whenever and wherever those might be.
