More Roger Sanchez More Roger Sanchez

Roger Sanchez plays C-Moog in Byron Bay on Christmas Eve and Quest at Surfers Paradise on December 26.

Since the release of his long awaited debut album First Contact, which featured the summer anthem Another Chance, Roger Sanchez has been concentrating on his new residency at the Pacha club in Ibiza titled Release Yourself. This has culminated in Roger Sanchez Presents Release Yourself I, a double CD compilation.

"I've really tried to capture the vibe of the last summer here in Ibiza," explains Roger. The album includes the a-capella version of Lazy by David Byrne and tunes from Layo & Bushwacka.

At about this time in the interview I hear the melodic sound of Roger's front doorbell and he excuses himself from the phone to answer the door of his Villa in Ibiza. Moments later I'm eavesdropping on Roger holding a conversation with his guest in Spanish. He must be chatting to one of his famous DJ mates and so I try to listen in hoping to catch a scoop amongst the Spanish lingo. Roger gets back on the phone and apologises.

"I can't believe I'm doing an interview and a workman arrives to fix the heating." I tell him I'm surprised heating workman get any work in Ibiza, the land of the perpetual Summer. But Roger assures me "it was beach weather up until a few weeks ago but now its getting chilly." I avoid the urge to make a pun about Ibiza being too chilly and let Roger go on to tell me about his upcoming tour of Europe and the UK.

After this tour he'll be following the sun and heading down to Australia, where he is headlining at Quest and C-Moog before heading to Sydney alongside his mates Basement Jaxx at Mobile Home on New Years Eve. Roger Sanchez was influential in kick starting the career of Basement Jaxx and so won't mind sharing the DJ booth with the guys on the last night of the year.

"I'm looking forward to catching up with them, we keep bumping into each other in hotel lobbies and airports." The life of a superstar DJ must be tough. As to what the New Years Eve punters can expect from his set, he says "I don't like to anticipate what I'm going to play too much until I get a vibe from the crowd. But it will be summer which is better than playing an open air event on a rainy night in Glasgow, so I'll try and get that vibe going and bring back some of the big hits from the last year."

Roger has started work on the follow up to First Contact. "I've just started working on rough ideas, I won't know what the vibe of the album will be until I finish a few tracks but I want to keep it personal like the first album." As he did with First Contact, Roger is looking to collaborate with other artists. "I've been talking to Kelis and Jason Kay from Jamiroquai and everyone is keen, but at the end of the day it comes down to whether our schedules match up. I didn't intend to work with Charlene Spiteri or N’dea Davenport on the first album it just happened, so who knows who could turn up on the next album."

I save the curly question till last - so what's this about you being a vampire? Roger just laughs.

"The director of my video clip I Never Knew asked me if I'd be interested in playing a vampire and I jumped at the chance. I've always been a big fan of vampires," Roger explains, talking about his move from spinning decks to sucking necks in the new internet TV series New Blood. Roger plays the cleverly named character Roger, who is a third generation Vampire (or New Blood) who works to keep the peace between bloodkind and humankind in London club land. Roger Sanchez has had fun in front of the camera but he's not about to move from Ibiza to Hollywood. "If somebody offered me a bigger role I wouldn't say no, but I'm not going to chance it."

Judging by some of the photos on the New Blood website, just make sure to keep your distance from the DJ booth.
